Contact Your Legislators

Since the start of the summer, the League of Women Voters Redistricting Committee and Wisconsin Fair Maps Coalition have been on the road nonstop, looking for input from voters across the state about redistricting. From Beloit to Rhinelander, Menomonie to Door County, we heard the same thing: the belief that voters choose their legislators – not the other way around.

Now, it is time for our legislators to pass a bill that will establish an IRC ahead of 2030, when the next map-drawing cycle will take place. Over 82% of Americans want redistricting done by an IRC rather than politicians. As we enter the next phase of our movement, let’s make sure our legislators know we will hold them accountable.

The Independent Redistricting Commission is Wisconsin’s fix for gerrymandering — 15 members (plus 3 backups), picked fairly from across the state, with no party calling the shots. They’ll draw maps using rules like a hard ban on giving any party an unfair advantage. Just fair maps, drawn by the people, for the people.

Gerrymandering is a bipartisan disease, so we will demand that legislators on both sides of the aisle work for a cure.

Do your legislators support an IRC?

*If you can arrange it, the best way to talk to your legislator is in person at their office! The next best is by phone, and the third best is by email.

Hello, my name is [Your Name], and I’m one of your constituents from [Your City or County].

I’m calling because I believe voters should choose their legislators — not the other way around. The League of Women Voters Redistricting Committee and Wisconsin Fair Maps Coalition drafted a proposal for Independent Redistricting Commission legislation that would take map-drawing power out of the hands of partisan politicians and put it where it belongs — with citizen commissioners. Independent commissions in other states have proven they can make elections fairer and restore trust in government, and this plan is designed specifically for Wisconsin.

The LWV Committee and Coalition have been sharing the draft proposal and gathering input from people all across the state — from Beloit to Rhinelander, Menomonie to Door County — and they’ve all been saying the same thing: it’s time to end the cycle of gerrymandering in Wisconsin.

On October 16, the LWV Committee and Coalition held a rally at the State Capitol to announce the delivery of their draft proposal to legislators. I’m asking you to support and co-sponsor legislation to establish an Independent Redistricting Commission ahead of 2030, so we don’t repeat the same broken process again. Over 80% of Americans — across parties — want this reform.

Gerrymandering is a bipartisan problem, and it’s time for both parties to help fix it.
Can I count on you to support the creation of an Independent Redistricting Commission?

Thank you for your time and for representing Wisconsin voters.
